MY FAVORITE HORROR STORY

Edited by Mike Baker & Martin Greenburg.

Featuring Stephen King Introduces Robert Bloch, F. Paul Wilson, Harlan Ellison, Peter Straub, and more!

OVERVIEW: Author F. Paul Wilson introduces his selected short story in this collection by remarking, "Every so often though, you come across a piece of fiction that blows you away, not just because youve been hanging on to every word, but because when youre done, you have to admit, I couldnt do that." These fifteen "I couldnt do that" horror short stories were chosen by contemporary horror authors including Stephen King, Peter Straub, and Harlan Ellison as being exemplary of their genre as well as personal favorites. Authors share why they selected these stories and how the tales influenced them. The stories in this collection have been published previously, and because they are genre classics by popular writers such as Richard Matheson, Robert Bloch, and H. P. Lovecraft, many might be familiar to horror-loving teens. Three heavily anthologized tales are Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poes The Tell-Tale Heart, and Ambrose Bierces An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. Nevertheless the stories included are sophisticated and unnerving, with the characters actions leading to a tantalizing final twist that cements and amplifies its horror without blood and gore. The book features an informative and interesting introduction to horror stories and their history and ends with author information. Middle through high school teens and adults who enjoy this genre will discover—or reread—solid tales that will linger long after the storys end. Because the cover of the book lists contemporary authors names with their story selections, horror fans surely will be drawn to it. -VOYA, 2001.
