Like most of Straubs ruminations on the nature of evil, it centers on a boy, but in this instance, the boy is not a victim. Keith Hayward is drawn by his nature and genetic inheritance to an irresistible fascination with death and the takng of life. His fathers brother, good-looking, suave Uncle Till, who has had a carrer as a local serial murderer known as The Ladykiller, recognizes his nephews inmost nature and gleefully tutors him in the techniques of doing ill to other creatures without getting caught. Even a cold-blooded socipath must learn some lessons in survival and it amuses Uncle Till to provide them. All of this takes place in that fertile forcing-ground of madmen and serial killers, Milwaukee.
