I picked up a book the other day and ended up at a matinee. It s not everyday you can open up a collection of stories by someone with whom you re not familiar, and finish up thinking you ve known them forever. I had that experience reading SMOTHERED DOLLS by A. R. Morlan. It can happen. A.R. Morlan has been around the block - the genre mags, and contributed her stories to many anthologies since 1985. This is the first time you can find a collection of 12 of her page-turning horror and science fiction in one place. From entertaining and thought-provoking shorts to novelette length tales, this collection packs a meaty punch to your solar plexus. After each and every entry, you just say, Wow!... Sweet! Then, you get that crackerjack prize thrown in A.R. s own notes on the creation of the story, and more times than not another Wow! After a while, it seemed that I was really watching movies , not just bundled up cozy with a good book it was almost a theater experience. Had to be the story my imagination isn t that good. It was just that way for me. Really. Just no popcorn. A superb story-teller with an uncanny ability to pick you up by your neck, throw you down and tie you that comfortable reading place for the duration, Morlan delivers the goods over and over again. Her short fiction is slick, concise and powerful. No words are wasted, her deftness with imagery and character development places you right there in the thick of it. A. R. Morlan bakes each story with strong story lines, refreshing subjects, believable narrative and a dash of her personal feelings and biases, enough to allow us to get closer to her, to maybe understand some of the motivation for the telling.
If you are looking for some novel reading entertainment, stuff that hasnt been done so often before, plan to pick up this collection and meet A.R. If you already know of Morlan s work, here s a great compilation ready for a reminder of those entertaining moments you already experienced. Add this one to your library (or DVD shelves). As you prepare to experience each short, a few things should be known: Entertainment is guaranteed. Reflection is mandatory.
Popcorn is optional. -Richard Lederman.
