I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus: A Breathers Christmas Carol.
by S.G. Browne.
OVERVIEW: Just in time for the holidays—a hilarious Christmas novella and sequel to the author’s highly acclaimed Breathers, “a zombie comedy with brains” (Kirkus Reviews).
Andy Warner doesn’t realize he’s really a zombie. Following the events in the acclaimed novel Breathers, he now wakes up on a hillside behind a research facility for the study of human decay, with no recollection of anything about his life. He does, however, have flashbacks of tests being performed on him….snippets of memories of other people...friends he had known, most of whom are now dead. As he makes his escape, Andy stumbles across a drunken, passed out Rent-A-Santa and steals his costume. Shortly thereafter, he encounters nine-year-old Annie playing outside, who excitedly invites “Santa” to come stay at her house, where she hides him in her playroom with all of her dolls.
As Andy now comes to grips with what he’s become, even as the flashbacks to his previous life continue, he struggles with his craving for human flesh. He starts to panhandle as a sidewalk Santa, and feasts on the local population whenever he can. He also spends a lot of time with Annie, who is mostly ignored by her career-focused parents, triggering another memory of the daughter Andy used to have. As Christmas approaches, Andy’s torn between his uncontrollable hunger and his desire to give Annie the parental love she’s missing. But when Andy encounters other zombies living in hiding who instantly recognize him as the celebrity he recently was, things get even more complicated….
