OVERVIEW: Lucy Taylor's new collection, FATAL JOURNEYS, visits not only foreign lands but Journeys into the mind, the soul, and the evil that lurks within. The award-winning author of THE SAFETY OF UNKNOWN CITIES has collected together a new volume of horror and eroticism short fiction, her first in over a decade. FATAL JOURNEYS features nine stories to titillate and horrify: SUMMERLAND is a disturbing tale that shows one doesn t have to go far to experience horror in the world. In HOW REAL MEN DIE Eddie wonders how he could enjoy sex so much, when in a few days. He s going to watch his best friend die. Worse is the fact that he is going to be the one that kills him. THE BUTSUDAN: A tale of greed, lust, and ultimately, revenge. SANGUMA shows us that no man should have the rights over a woman whether it is body... or soul. What lurks in the fog and is the monster man or myth in NIKISHI . THE HIGH AND MIGHTY ME begins with the boys of summer, lighting fireworks, with fireflies buzzing as the day begins to fade. With Captain KaBlam! visiting the neighborhood, the boys discover what fun truly can be. Or so they thought. In GOING NORTH Pruitt has a plan. She s going to travel, to get away from Daddy and Kenny and the unwanted attentions she s receiving. Pruitt is only seven years old and she has a plan. Also featured are TIVAR and SOUL EATERS. Features an introduction by author Jack Ketchum (The Girl Next Door).
DARK HALL PRESS: Revenants, demon lovers, shape-shifters, sacrificial rituals — Fatal Journeys is a terrifying collection full of twisted surprises… Taylor’s writing style is sensual and worldly, lush with natural beauty… While there are indeed supernatural elements here, they are merely a means of more deeply exploring the horrors of the human condition. Greed, lust, jealousy, illness, physical abuse, predatory behavior — the dark reaches of the soul are plotted with haunting vision. All the stories are great, but a few standouts for me include the bone chilling “Soul Eaters”, “The Butsudan”, “Nikishi”, “Going North”, and “Wingless Beasts”. – W.J. Renehan
THE HORROR FICTION REVIEW: 'Summerland' gets things going in the Bahamas as a sister and brother meet a most unusual fate; 'Soul Eaters' is a pre-apocalyptic monster tale that begins aboard a cruise ship heading for Vancouver, Canada, while 'The Butsudan' finds a Westerner discovering dark secrets while in Japan. As good as the stories are… the final three are easily the best of the bunch. 'Going North' is a fantastic revenge tale about a slightly off-balance aunt helping her niece overcome the adult human monsters in her life; 'The High and Mighty Me' follows a man searching for a fireworks vendor who he swears killed one of his friends when they were kids. What he finally finds is anything but what he expected. And capping the collection is 'Wingless Beasts,' a prime example of how to do a serial killer story the right way. Taylor keeps this one tight and adds a wicked spin you might not see coming. Any horror fan will enjoy Taylor's FATAL JOURNEYS. I won't be forgetting a few of these tales anytime soon… - Nick Cato
SCREAM / HORORNOVELSREVIEW.COM: Lucy Taylor has been labeled the “Queen of Erotic Horror” and although many of the stories in her collection Fatal Journeys have an erotic theme, Taylor shows us just how diverse she can really be. The author has done an interesting thing with this collection in her choice of a theme. While many multi-author anthologies out there have themes, Taylor has chosen her love of traveling and exotic places to be the center of this book. “Summerland” The characters are enjoyable and the plot gets heavy in this one. “The Batsudan,” a westerner faces demons of her past in this horrifying tale. “How Real Men Die”, The horrors in this story lie in the minds of sick men and produces images that are hard to shake. It’s grueling, but memorable. “Going North” brings us back state-side, Florida to be specific, in this revenge tale of a little girl wanting nothing more than to escape to the North Pole from the monsters in her life. The collection is capped off very solidly with a remarkable tale, “The High And Mighty and Me”, in which a man travels the southern US to locate a fireworks vendor who may be responsible for the killing of his childhood friend. Lucy Taylor is master storyteller and if you need a good reason to not sleep at night, Fatal Journeys is for you. - Jonathan Reitan
