OVERVIEW: Jaded Americans can find some respite from incessant 2008 presidential campaigning with CAPITOL HELL, a snarky political satire whose premise is at once dark and hilarious. Artfully crossing the politicians in America s headlines with yesterday s schlock horror and science fiction movies, the startling duotone results will make some smile and some smile uncomfortably. Example: Vice President Dick Cheney is crossed with Dracula to form the aptly named Dickula, whose latest victim is Colin Powell. (On the card back Dickula is described as administering a fatal Colinoscopy.) The other 23 cards deliver similar political monsters on both sides of the aisle...The recombinant DNA of current White House occupants, presidential aspirants from each party, pundits and others are mixed with classic horror and sci-fi flicks in the author s inky lab. Skin-crawling monstrosities result: Rudy Giuliani + Nosferati = Nosferudy.Hillary Clinton in Attack of the Fifty-Something Woman. John McCain as Dr. McCainlove takes a nosedive. Since then he s made a semi-respectable living creating Hollywood storyboards for countless films, such as Frank Darabont s The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption and Tim Burton s Mars Attacks! while producing fumetti graphic novels like The Flying F *ck, and the cultish Extremely Weird Tales for Dark Horse. But tired of respect and no doubt seeking to secure a better paying political patronage job following the 2008 elections, Mr. Von Sholly has decided to cozy up to America s most famous politicians with his amusing election year love letter, CAPITOL HELL, while there is still a 1st Amendment to protect him. Writing the bulk of the card captions came easy for Denis Kitchen, also an underground cartoonist and a veteran publisher (Kitchen Sink Press), whose last foray into campaign year tomfoolery was 1992 when he published Republicans Attack!, a card set ballyhooed by The New York Times and sold at the Democratic National Convention. This time a satiric mirror is held to both parties.
