OVERVIEW: Fog radiant with floodlights blocks the far end of the alley, but that isn't why his mind feels near to paralysis. His shadow has thrown itself face down in the alley, and it's no longer alone. For the moment they have nothing he would want to call heads, but they have at least one arm each, altogether too long in both cases, that they're stretching out to him.
He daren't look. He can't even bear to see their increasingly malformed shadows. As he dashes into the alley he shuts his eyes tight, feeling like a child who's trying to believe he can hide in his personal dark. OVERVIEW: Welcome to the most dangerous intersection in Hollywood - the razors edge between fantasy and reality. The house lights dim, the curtains open and the veil of illusion is finally lifted as both dreams and nightmares come true.
Here truth is under contract to ambition, morality is left on the cutting-room floor and life and death are the ingredients of a storyline from which no one escapes.
Fine Cuts is a new collection of tales about Hollywood by a three-time winner of both the British Fantasy and World Fantasy Awards, in a volume destined to become a classic of modern horror.

Someone whose grandfather was involved in digging the first of the pair that take roads under the river says attempts were made to block up the excavations. The bosses accused the workmen of trying to prolong the job, but some of her grandfathers colleagues insisted the tunnel had been blocked from within. The wife of a worker at the sorting office on Copperas Hill reveals that the postmen are loath to use the tunnel that links the office to Lime Street Station. Perhaps its a tale to frighten new recruits, since the veterans say the lights in the tunnel sometimes fail, unless theyre switched off as a prank, at which point you may realise you have company that doesnt need to see you to find you, because youll hear its whisper in your ear before you encounter its wet flabby touch....
